Security and Emergency Contacts

General Situation

The overall security situation in Kenya—and Nairobi in particular—is currently calm. Nonetheless, conditions can change quickly, and visitors are advised to remain vigilant and stay informed throughout their stay.

As in many major cities, key risks in Nairobi include petty theft, occasional violent crime, the potential threat of terrorism, corruption, and road traffic accidents. Standard precautions are recommended.

October marks the beginning of Kenya’s “Short Rains” season, bringing occasional localized showers. Visitors should expect brief but heavy afternoon rainfall. Please be prepared with waterproof gear, as rain can also lead to muddy conditions during game drives or local excursions.

Kenyans are widely known for their hospitality and warmth. To ensure a safe and smooth stay during the GGAA Conference, we encourage participants to observe the following basic precautions:

  • Stick to main roads and well-lit areas; avoid shortcuts, isolated paths, and unfamiliar neighborhoods, especially after dark.
  • Use reliable transportation in the evenings. Preferably pre-arranged taxis, hotel shuttles, or trusted app-based services such as Uber or Little Cab. ILRI also recommends Jimcab (+254 733 275 722 / ilridesk@jimcab.co.ke).
  • While in vehicles, keep doors locked and windows closed. Store valuables (phones, bags, sunglasses) out of sight.
  • Keep personal belongings secure and avoid leaving them unattended both at the venue and in public spaces.
  • Carry minimal cash; store valuables and original passports securely in your hotel. Carry a copy of your passport when moving around.
  • To avoid fraud, ensure credit card transactions are completed in your presence and retain receipts.
  • Do not accept food or drinks from strangers, and keep an eye on your own when in public establishments.
  • Avoid large crowds where possible. If you find yourself in one, remain alert and exit calmly when it is safe to do so.
  • If you observe unusual or suspicious behavior, such as someone following you or lingering near the venue, move away discreetly and notify a staff member, hotel, or security personnel.

These guidelines are intended to ensure that all GGAA participants enjoy a safe and smooth experience in Nairobi.
